London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1847. 1st UK Edition. Hardcover. In the original very dark greeny covers with blind stamped decoration over all, and the spine with gilt titling. Some rubbing to the gilt lettering and boards, but the covers are complete, clean, and all hinges tight. Apparently professionally recased at some point in the past preserving all the original cloth and endpapers, etc, - just improving it. Even I couldn't see this, until, looking for it, I noticed a slight gap in the paper at the gutters between the pastedowns and the front free endpapers. The book is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks Very Good. Page fore-edges irregularly cut and toned/browning with age, but generally clean. A note in old ink to the top of the title page stating "Belfast Chess Club 1848. From Francis McCracken. 1st English edition. (xx) + 291 pp + ( 1 page Advert 'Works on Chess' by George Walker) +…

The early pages have some handling, usage marks. Beyond these, the contents are most gratifyingly clean, clear, smart, bold, confident, alert, more than competent. fk.
