"Original Edition With A Continuation Of The Journal In New York & Paris , A Preface, Appendices & Illustrations". List of biographical details of contemporaries mentioned. Imprisoned in 1848 and sentenced to 14 years transportation for political agitation during the Irish uprising, the author was on board the convict ship "Neptune" at the Cape Of Good Hope during the anti-convict rebellion from September 19th 1849, when the ship anchored in Simonstown, until March 19th 1850 when it sailed for Tasmania. The anti-convict movement was in full force denying the landing of convicts, employment for them, or food and provisons. Almost 50pp devoted to his enforced stay there. Originally published in "The Citizen", Mitchel's first New York newspaper, from January to August 1854, the chapters on the Cape give a view thereof not recorded elsewhere.
