Bound in publisher's chocolate brown cloth, gilt lettering and black decoration to spine. Light yellow/vanilla plain endpapers. xii pp prelim material, 460 numbered pages, plus 14 unnumbered sheets (would be counted as 28 pp) glossy b&w white inserts (photos and maps) scattered through text. An interesting approach - two separate biographies by two different authors bound together. The Soldier section takes up three quarters of the book . Each has a separate 'critical essay on authorities' but (thankfully) a single index covers both. Condition notes: At first glance, merely a solid reading copy structurally sound. Lacking dj. Binding solid and square. No notes or highlighting. Wear to boards (spine ends rolled, corners bumped). Light foxing to top edge; a brown stain mars the lower 3" of the fore-edge extending the outer inch of the lower edge. Through the penetration marvels of coffee, the stain does extend onto many pages by as much as a half inch. Former owner's embossed stamp on front flyleaf reads: "Library of James V. Murfin". Murfin penned the famous account of the Battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg "A Gleam of Bayonets" (winner of the Fletcher Pratt Award of the New York Civil War Roundtable for the best nonfiction Civil War book of 1965). Subsequently Murfin wrote on behalf of the National Park Service, including volumes on battlefields of the US Civil War and the American Revolution. You can imagine the edge stain came from Murfin's coffee cup as he read Sanger's account of Antietam, excited to tell another version of the story...and "the rest is history." We personally inspect every book we offer.

Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

FIRST EDITION. Lawrence made his way into the service on two occasions by using adopted names. In August 1927, writing from Karachi, he told Edward Garnett that he had arranged notes in sections and was copying them as a Christmas gift to Garnett. Lawrence told Garnett that he wrote the book tightly, “because our clothes are so tight, and our lives so tight in the service. Los Angeles, California, 1903; 2 1/2" x 7" satin ribbon badge from the G.A.R. Camp Fire at Los Angeles August 26, 1903, previously belonging to Civil War Colonel E.F.C. Klokke (1834-1914) of the 24th Illinois Volunteers. Klokke was an officer in the Cumberland Department of the newly formed Signal Corps and a veteran of the Battle Of Shiloh. In 1867 he was elected Clerk of the Cook County Illinois Superior Court and held that office for a number years before moving to Los Angeles, where he built a landmark Victorian home at 2105 South Figueroa and soon established himself as a prominent citizen. Accompanying the badge are two 2 3/4" x 6" red satin ribbons. The text of the first reads, "Col. E.F.C. Klokke, Compliments of Mr. & Mrs. Wiley Wells, Saturday, January 27th, 1888." The second ribbon, with the same wording, is made out to Mrs. Klokke. Guilford Wiley Wells (1840-1909) was born in Livingston County, New York. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering."
