It is dated 1957, and is addressed to the famous author & scholar, Melvin P. McGovern at the U.S. Army Command, Japan. At that time, Boxer was at University of London's King's College. . The author discusses a reference to Hoea 8th year and confesses that he [Boxer] "gave up my Japanese studies some years ago...." Boxer also discusses the" M.Kunita's NIHON KOHAN CHIZU SHUSEI, Tokyo 1932" cartographic reference book. Boxer also states: "...Although I notice that the latest and best work on the subject which is known to me, GeorgeBeans, A LIST OF JAPANESE MAPS OF THE TOKUGAWA EAR [Tall Tree Librar...1951...does not list any maps of Nagasaki prints in the Hoei period..." Nicely signed, "C.R. Boxer." . This letter is held in place with 4 of the old photo album black 'corners' which allows the letter to be removed and read. . Nicely preserved example. . This copy came from the McGovern library, though there are no markings or indications to that fact.
