The text is illustrated with black-and-white photography and illustrations. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured insert to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel, and, within that insert black Japanese characters. Gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Black and white illustrated dustwrapper with red coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Sympathetic, thoughtful and with a wealth of sensible and acute observation, this book is a valuable addition to the literature on contemporary Japan. In it the author describes the feeling and texture of the countryside itself, the status of the Japanese woman, Buddhism and Shinto, and there is also a couple of chapters on Japanese theatre. Rubbing to the top book corners, lower book edges and top back strip corners. Tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. Creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the panels and there is a small tear to the top edge of the rear panel. Fading of the back strip. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
