New York: Macmillan, 1904. First Edition. Octavo. Color frontispiece, 541 pages, (2 )pages of ads. Hearn planned to return to the United States in 1903 to lecture on Japanese topics at Cornell University, but an outbreak of typhoid fever in Ithaca prompted the cancellation of the series. The finished lectures became instead Hearn's final book, Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation (1904). Bound inoriginal tan cloth, lettered and decorated in black and gilt, spine gilt, white laid end papers, top edge gilt, rear hinge cracket but quite sturdy, in the very scarce in original dust jacket.with chipping to spine ends, short split to jacket on upper joint. A very nice copy. [ BAL 7941].
