Sobre este artículo

Smith, Elder and Co., London: 1848, 1848 pp. (8), (24), 200. Added wood cut title page. Wood cut text illustrations and initials by Richard Doyle. 8vo. 20.5 cm. Attractive Late 19th century binding of half morocco leather over marbled boards . Slightly rubbed. Manuscript inscription to Caroline H. Dall from John Patton, 1850. Leigh Hunt was "as thorough a man of letters as ever existed" (11th Ed. EB). He was much beloved by most of the ma jor English literary figures of the both the Romantic and Victorian periods. Dickens said that he was, "the very soul of truth and honour." His writing still has the capacity to easily charm us. This is a delightful collection of essays on the pastoral poetry of Sicily. It was first issued as a beguiling 'gift book', but has come to be regarded as as worthy sequel to Hunt's critical essays on the English poets ( 'Imagination and Fancy' and 'Wit and Humour'). The illustrative chapter heads by the renowned English caricaturist Richard Doyle (1824-1883) strike just the right tone for this interes ting work. Included are essays on: Christmas and Italy; Sicily, and its Mythology; Glances at Ancient Sicilian History and Biography; Theocritus; Norman Times, Legend of King Robert; Italian and Engli sh Pastoral; Scotch Pastoral; Return to Sicily Mount AEtna; Bees; Miscellaneous Feelings Respecting Sicily, Its Music, Its Religion, and Its Modern Poetry; and, Overflowings of the Jar. "A pleasure so exquisite as almost to amount to pain" -- Leigh Hunt to Alexander Ireland, 2 June 1848. . **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140 Language: eng. Hardcover. Very Good.
