No dust jacket was issued. Signed by the author on the Foreward page. Clean and unmarked, with a square, tight binding. llustrated throughout with original postcards, both color and black-and-white, mounted on individual pages with corners inserted into slits, as in a photograph album. Frontispiece photo is an original studio portrait of the author, mounted with glue, protected by tissue guard. Photo and postcards have left faint corresponding toned areas on pages opposite. Includes a Family Record starting in 1743 in North Wales, and Supplementary Notes. This is a deaccessioned museum copy. A rare book, lovely and unusual!
ABOUT THE BOOK: Privately printed in 1906 for relatives and friends of William E. Morris, Jr., Lawrence, Kansas. Not numbered, but likely not many printed. The book is a daily account of life on board Cunard ocean liners Umbria, Saxonia, Caronia, and Ivernia; visits with family in England and North Wales (Rhyl and Rhuddlan); travels around England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland detailing tourist stops. He writes of his experience touring steerage on one return trip on the Saxonia steamer to the United States: "Some 1,900 Russian Jews were passengers in the steerage....A more dejected, wretched-looking lot of human beings it would be hard to find. Their condition was pitiable, indeed. Now they were trying to recuperate from seasickness....Yesterday afternoon, in company with a fellow-passenger, I went through the steerage. Such a sight as met my eyes I will not soon forget! Fathers, mothers and children huddled together here and there like a lot of beasts--some eating and drinking, some doing one thing and another--anything to pass the monotony of the voyage. The odor here is anything but pleasant, and coming in contact with the Russian emigrant makes it almost beyond endurance. I was very glad to leave this place and go where air and sunlight were plentiful."
FOREWARD: "Having had the good fortune of making two visits to Europe during the years of 1903 and 1905, and keeping a diary of both of my journeys, thought, perhaps, the perusual of my rambles would afford a slight degree of pleasure to others, I have decided to issue this little book for gratuitous distribution to my relatives and friends. Mistakes, if there be any, I trust will be overlooked, as this is my first effort. Conveying to the recipient my highest compliments and will wishes, I am, Sincerely yours," (signed by author)

One hundred and seventy-six early Turners, most in colour and reproduced for the first time, and 22 other reproductions.
Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a modest lower-middle-class family. He lived in London all his life, retaining his Cockney accent and assiduously avoiding the trappings of success and fame. A child prodigy, Turner studied at the Royal Academy of… Leer más

The Major Natural History Paintings Southern,
John (Archibald Thorburn) Archibald Thorburn FZS (31 May 1860, Lasswade, Midlothian - 9 October 1935, Hascombe, Surrey) was a Scottish artist who specialised in wildlife, painting mostly in watercolour. He regularly visited Scotland to sketch birds in the wild, his favourite haunt being the Forest of Gaick near Kingussie in Invernesshire. His widely reproduced images of British wildlife, with their evocative and dramatic backgrounds, are enjoyed as much today as they were by naturalists a century ago. Archibald was born at Viewfield House, Lasswade, Midlothian, the fifth son of Robert Thorburn (1818–1885), portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria. His first education was at Dalkeith and in Edinburgh, after which he was sent to the newly founded St John's Wood School of Art in London. His stay there was only brief, since on the death of his father he sought the guidance of Joseph Wolf. It… Leer más

A very good copy Godolphin is a satirical 19th-century British romance novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. It is about the life of an idealistic man, Percy Godolphin, and his eventual lover, Constance Vernon. Written as a frame narrative, Godolphin provides a satirical insight into the day-to-day lives of the early 19th-century British elite. The story is told through the narration of two protagonists, Percy Godolphin and Constance Vernon, as they rise to prominence among the London elite. Godolphin was published two years after The Reform Bill passed which put an end to the exclusive high class in England. Bulwer-Lytton, being a politician, was a member of this British elite. Literary scholar William Cragg reveals that the original novel published in 1833 was replaced in 1840 with a revised copy. Bulwer-Lytton received very harsh criticisms upon the novel's original release due… Leer más
