[9.25x6in]; xii, [1] 168 pp., 36 black/white illustrations, frontispiece image of author, fold out facsimile, in six colors, of Mitchell's 1846 map of the west attached to back free end paper; Desert tan cloth binding with dark brown lettering on spine and desert illustration on front, illustration of wagon descending from mountains to desert on front and back end papers; Pale yellow/cream dust jacket with dark brown lettering on cover and spine with illustration of pioneer family on front and book advertisement on back, Powell's, San Jose, bookseller stamp on back end paper; Slight darkening of dust jacket with small closed tears at top of spine. [Kurutz 428]. These are fifty selected sketches by by William Lewis Manly (1821-1903, also spelled Manley) and edited by Woodward of articles written by Manly for The Pioneer weekly paper in San Jose, CA, in the early 1890's. Manly is known for his 1894 book, Death Valley in ‘49, which many of the Death Valley articles in this book are not included in the 1894 book. These accounts of difficult travel through Death Valley to California are supplemented by other articles from The Pioneer by Mrs. Edward Burrel on the Wade party and their travel in Death Valley at the same time.
