London: Printed for J.Johnson; T.N. Longman; et al., 1797. Full Leather. Good. Octavo. Two volumes. Pp. [ii], lviii, [17]-286; [iv], 264, [48] index. Half-titles, and four engraved plates, including frontispieces. Contemporary mottled calf, panelled in gilt, gilt-tooled spines with morocco labels. Bindings somewhat rubbed, corners exposed, joints worn and starting to split at upper and lower ends, ex library, with labels on front paste down and ink stamps on title and other leaves, but otherwise an attractive, wide-margined set. First published in 1763, John Hoole's (172 7-1803) translation of Tasso was greatly admired by Samuel Johnson, with whom he was on intimate terms, and from whom he received a portion of his library upon his death. Hoole translated other of the Italian classics, including the "Orlando Furioso " of Ariosto (1773-83), and Tasso's "Rinaldo" (1792). He also wrote verse which, though fluent and accomplished, lacked great merit, and is now forgotten.
