Herbert Temple, longtime art director for Ebony and Jet magazines lived from 1919 to 2011. Temple was born in Gary, IN but moved to Evanston Township IL for high school. At 18 he went to the army and traveled to New Guinea and Australia. Returning from his military service, Temple attended the Chicago Art Instituteon his G. I. Bill. In 1953 media mogul John Johnson hired Temple as an artist. In 1967 he was promoted to Art Director where he worked at the nation's premier African American publisher for 54 years. He worked with many stars including John F. Kennedy, Rev. Martin Luther King, Michael Jackson and John Lennon. He met his wife of 41 years at JPC , Althelstan Wiggins. Temple was very involved in the community serving as Executive Director of the Southside Community Art Center. Temple also designed the JPC Logo, Fashion Fair logo, Raveen and Duke hair products logos, and he illustrated the Ebony cookbook. Many may not knowTemple by name, but countless people know his work. Temple was an artistic Maverick!
