John Carter first traveled to Mars in the February, 1912 issue of "All-Story Magazine" as a character in the first installment of the serial "Under The Moon of Mars"; it appeared under the nom-de-plume of "Norman Bean" (Burroughs actually signed the manuscript submission with that name but never used a pseudonym again).
