BINDING/CONDITION: beige cloth with title and series device printed on the front cover, the top edge tint is red; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Index. Landmark endpaper style showing two-color scenes. Description: Illustrated by the author; the jacket art is not credited, but looks like his work. This is Number 39 in the Landmark series. The Landmark series presents historic and biographical books for young readers, designed to hold the attention as well as to inform. Lives of outstanding people and topics of interest in American and world history are presented in story form with illustrations. John Paul Jones, the ''Father of the American Navy'' is well remembered for his words ''I have just begun to fight!''. As captain of the frigate Ranger, Jones was the first to hoist the Stars and Stripes to the masthead of an American man-of-war. It was the proudest moment of his life, for this was a new flag of a new country, and Captain Jones ordered a thirteen-gun salute and glowed with pride when he herd the answering salute of the French flagship. The youngest nation was recognized by France! His exploits off the coast of Scotland followed. Then, in command of the Bon Homme Richard, he and his men fought the English like tigers! Armstrong Sperry is also the author of the Newbery Medal winning book, Call It Courage, as well as the first book in this Landmark series -- The Voyages of Christopher Columbus, and another in the World Landmark series -- Captain Cook Explores the South Seas.
