Robert Clayton [1695-1758] was a Protestant and Bishop of Clogher from 1745-1758 and member of both the Royal Society and Society of Antiquaries. This work is a translation of a manuscript written by the Presetto of the Franciscans of Egypt, who set out from the convent at Grand Cairo in 1722, and discovered a set of hieroglyphs in Gebel el Mokatab or Written Mountains in wilderness of Sinai. Clayton offered to travel to the region to participate in any future efforts on part of the society, but nothing further had materialized. However, traveler and author Edward Wortley Montague [1713-1776] was inspired to make a personal journey to the site and provide his own remarks on the inscriptions.
