Elias Boudinot (1740-1821) born in Pennsylvania but who spent most of his life in Elizabeth and later in Burlington, New Jersey, was elected to New Jersey's Provincial Assembly in 1775 and was commissioned a colonel in the Continental Army by Washington. He was a member of the Second Continental Congress and in 1782 was elected President of the Continental Congress. He was one of New Jersey's original members of the House of Representatives under the new Constitution and in 1795 was named Director of the U.S. Mint by President Washington.
