Sobre este artículo
BY HENRY FIELDING WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY AUSTIN DOBSON. [Vinheta com leão e âncora]. LONDON. PRINTED AND ISSUED BY CHARLES WHITTINGHAM & CO. AT THE CHISWICK PRESS. MDCCCXCII [1892].
In 8º.
This edition is limited to Five Hundred copies, viz; 25 in Japanese Vellum, numbered 1 to 25. 475 on Handmade paper, numbered 26 to 500.
[EN] In octavo. 19x13 cm. xxi, [3], 277, [1] pp.
Recent binding with parchment spine and cardboard folders.
Illustrated with an engraving (etched by James Basire) on the front cover, containing a profile portrait of the author Henry Fielding, attributed to Hogarth who drew it from a sketch of that time, but very arguably original, as can be read in the epigraph that precedes it on the fly leaf.
Copy no. 241/500, with an armoured ex-libris by Robert Walker, and from a justified print run: «This edition is limited to Five Hundred copies, viz; 25 in Japanese Vellum, numbered 1 to 25. 475 on Handmade paper, numbered 26 to 500. This is No. 241».
The printer"s vignette of this 1892 edition (with the lion and the anchor) can be found as a watermark on the paper.
Work about the life and customs of Portuguese society before the 1755 earthquake.
Henry Fielding left with his wife for Lisbon in June of 1754, hoping to improve his health in a warmer climate. This daily journal of his voyage is a kind of "novel without a plot" (Cross), reflecting his shifting moods. The preface, probably the last words that Fielding wrote for publication, is a delightful essay on the art of travel writing. Fielding died in Lisbon two months after his arrival. Two different editions were printed by William Strahan for Andrew Millar in January 1755, after Henry Fielding"s death in Portugal. The demand caused by interest in the Lisbon earthquake in November led to unedited copies (apparently) put on the market.
The title page of the original 1755 edition with the printer"s mark is reproduced after the editor"s note of the 1892 edition.
