Cork: Francis Guy, 1877. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A scarce first edition of this journal narrating Captain Seymour's travels, presented by the author to Captain Brook. William Deane Seymour (1813-1886) was an Irish shipping agent and consul to a number of countries. He owned two steamships as well as sharing a sailing ship with his brother; he also owned Wilmount Castle, built for his family in 1852, where he installed one of the earliest telephones in the country. He also penned 'A Tour in Syria and Palestine'.In this work, he explores some of the most fascinating areas on the planet in a journey spanning thirty thousand miles, and includes vists to Japan, China, India, the United States and Europe.This is the author's presentation copy, addressed to a Captain Brook 'with the author's compliments'.Illustrated with a mounted frontispiece photography of the author, which Seymour has then hand-signed beneath.A first edition of a very scarce work. In a full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities resulting in some discolouration to the cloth. Author's presentation inscription to the front endpaper; he has also signed his name beneath the frontispiece. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. Very Good
