hoc est, Arcani, & horribiles Judaeorum adversus Christum Deum, & Christianam religionem libri anekdotoi. Altdorf : Johann Heinrich Schönnerstadt, for Johann Hoffmann (Nuremberg) and Johann David Zunner (Frankfurt-am-Main), 1681. First edition. Six parts in one volume, thick small quarto (220 x 170 mm), contemporary blind-tooled vellum boards (both boards expertly rejoined), spine with raised bands; top edge stained black; original endpapers; engraved frontispiece portrait of Wagenseil (some marginal restoration), title-page printed in red and black, pp. [4], 633, [15]; 260; 60; 480; 45 [i. e., 75], [1]; 100; [1 Errata]; text in double columns in Hebrew with parallel Latin translation by Wagenseil; First edition of Wagenseil's Tela Ignea Satanae (=Flaming Arrows of Satan), an anthology of Jewish polemical writings against Christianity with critique and refutation by the German-Christian translator. The Hebraist Johann Christoph Wagenseil (1633-1705) was born in Nuremberg. Over many years he collected and researched anti-Christian writings by Jewish authors; the present work contains his refutation of these various attacks on the Christian faith. Wagenseil's ulterior motive in attempting to expose the perceived falsehoods inherent in Jewish arguments was to see the Jews persuaded into conversion - not to have them punished or treated unjustly.
