An unknown number of copies were produced; Ford signed seven of them at a reading in 1990. Photo-reproduced sheets on 3-hole paper. In this copy, page 120 was typed on a different typewriter than the first 119 pages. A fine copy, bound in a flexible blue binder. The film was directed by Michael Fields and starred Dermot Mulroney, Lili Taylor, Sam Shepard and Valerie Perrine. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Ink note on upper wrapper, a few smudges and curled corners, but a very good copy. Copy #31 of this unspecified preproduction draft of Perelman, James Poe and John Farrow's award-winning adaptation to the screen of Verne's novel. Michael Anderson directed the Oct. 1956 release, one of the first two Todd-AO productions. The cast of literally hundreds spread across a number of countries, and included David Niven, Cantinflas, Noel Coward, John Gielgud, Trevor Howard, Finlay Currie, and many, many others. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and Perelman, Poe and Farrow shared the Oscar for Best Screenplay, as well as NY Film Critics and WGA awards in the same category. It was the last of Perelman's screen credits over a quarter of a century's work. The early ink note on the upper wrapper indicates "Minus Henrietta Seq" but the script collates as complete through "The End," and includes an additional 4 leaf appendix at the end.

The lot includes two variant drafts of a treatment, 99 leaves and 86 leaves, the latter in specially printed production binder, with several rather frayed revised inserts laid in, with scattered manuscript corrections and deletions. Also present is a file of a dozen pieces of correspondence relating largely to research, but as well to trying to place the project. The most significant item among the latter is a long, single-spaced typed letter to Nugent from Frank Capra, rather messily typed, with corrections, signed "Warmest regards, Frank," responding in enthusiastic detail after his reading of the treatment, but declining to get involved due to commitment to another project.
