London: Printed for Henry Sampson Woodfall in Pater Noster Row, 1773. Small octavo. Two volumes. Leather bound in full period calf unlettered with gilt fillets. Rubbing to edges and corners, with some loss at corners, and minor spotting and toning throughout, else very good plus.. A superb copy of the collected edition of the Junius Letters. Originally published in the London Public Advertiser from January 21, 1769 to January 21, 1772 under the pseudonym "Junius," the so-called "Junius Letters" were polemical letters directed to, and highly critical of, the government of King George III. In the letters, Junius poured brilliant and slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers on account of various public policies that allegedly ruined England and drove the American colonies toward rebellion. The letters were widely regarded as polemical masterpieces by English and American observers, and they were widely reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, lending moral support to the early revolutionary cause in America. Among other points of opposition, Junius vehemently opposed the Tea Duty and predicted that the colonies would be driven to independence by the Crown's measures. Although Junius's identity has not been definitively proven, some scholars suspect the letters to be the work of Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818), an Irish-born British pamphleteer. After running in the Public Advertiser, the Junius Letters were collected and printed in book form in 1772 by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the newspaper's owner and editor-though many believe the book was arranged by Junius himself. Woodfall was tried in 1770 for printing the letters on the charge of seditious libel, but was ultimately released of all charges on the finding of a mistrial. The Junius Letters, comprising sixty-nine letters in all, would exercise a significant influence on public opinion in both England and the American colonies in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. This beautiful edition of the Woodfall printing contains a 1772 printing date, although the bibliographer Lowndes dates this edition (with the index and table of contents) to 1773. A beautiful and near-fine collection.

Octavo, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, black morocco label, engraved portrait of Pestalozzi + (1) + 390pp, an excellent copy.Printing and the Mind of Man, no.258.
First edition containing an exhaustive exposition of Pestalozzi's principles of education and the book on which Pestalozzi's fame rests. "How Gertrude teaches her children" proclaimed something entirely new in the field of popular education – the principle of self-activity in acquiring and using knowledge in its first stages. The most important and forward-looking of his ideas, which he stressed continually in practice as well as precept, was that the true method of education is to develop the child, not to train him as one trains a dog. The pupil must be regarded as more important than the subject and the 'whole man' must be developed.

London: Gale, Curtis and Fenner et al, 1813. Leather. Good. 11.5" by 9". Mr Edward Bocquet. A profusely illustrated edition of the well known critical letters regarding King George III's government. In a lovely crushed morocco binding. This work was penned by an anonymous polemicist and was published in two volumes in 1772. This is a collection of private and open letters as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The addresees of the letters include the Duke of Grafton, Edward Weston, Duke of Bedford, Zeno and more. Junius is a pseudonym for the unknown author of these letters. With ten plates. Collated, lacking 'Sir William Draper' and 'Duke of Grafton' plates. Junius' identity is a topic of great debate and may remain unsolved unless further evidence is found. Many scholars believe the identification may be that of Sir Philip Francis. Portraits to this work are by Mr Edward Bocquet, an historical engraver, after original…

London: By T. Bensley, 1805. 2 volumes. First Edition Thus and a large paper copy with wide margins, a new edition of the revised version of the "Letters," with a dedication to the English people and a preface. With engraved titles and 21 stipple engraved portraits by Ridley, Hopwood and others, the tissue guards present. Tall 8vos, bound in maroon crushed morocco over cloth covered boards, the spines with blind ruled flat bands and two gilt lettered compartments, t.e.g. xxxi, 252; iii, 284 pp. A fine set. An elegant large paper edition of a classic. The "letters of Junius" were originally contributed to the London "Public Advertiser" from the 21st of January 1769 to the 21st of January 1772 and were intended to discredit the ministry of the duke of Grafton (although their political content is of little interest now, and indeed had little effect in their time). Their interest lies in their style and the controversy regarding their authorship. In the former they imitate Swift,…
