Kabakov, Ilya & Emilia: “MORNING, EVENING, NIGHT...”. Installation dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen

Denmark 2005. To mark the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen, some of the most prominent figures in the contemporary art world, the American artist Joseph Kosuth and the Russian-American artist couple Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, were invited to provide a fresh perspective on the Danish fairytale writer as seen through a contemporary art lens. Physically and visually, you are ushered into a universe condensing every romantic element of fairytales: dramatically lit mountains, forests, castles, grottos and tiny revolving figures. You will see such things as a life-like model of a mountain village with a castle on the peak, a fictitious museum among gaints’ legs , and classical style paintings. You will be carried away by this enchanted and enchanting fairytale world, while simultaneously confronting the means for producing the illusion.
