Author William Mayo wrote this book based on his own experiences in Africa and the Spanish-Morocco coast, with a significant portion focused on Romer's medical studies as well as his experiences as a ship doctor. With a contemporary inscription, dated 1850, to the front pastedown, and two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
