London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1901.. FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). pp. xxxii+286+[2. ads]. Original publisher's binding of gilt-decorated dark green cloth, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece, 47 wood-engraved vignettes after Hugh Thomson Inscription to front free endpaper, 'A.M.S. from S.D.'. Spine slightly cocked, contents clean and crisp. Generally a very good example. First published in 1894, "an idyl of provincial life, a kind of Kentucky Paul and Virginia, a romance in which the traditional hero and heroine move with some of the stateliness and grace of a minuet through a courtship whose tempo and details were considerably slower and daintier than those of a generation or two later... its style, characterized by lightness, slyness of jest, and restraint of emotion" (Knight - James Lane Allen and the Genteel Tradition). The pastoral subject and style is perfectly illustrated by Thomson's delicacy of line.
