Poetry by William Miller Herschell (1873-1939) of Indiana, journalist and writer for the The Indianapolis News, where he worked from 1902 until his death. A few of the poems are written with vernacular accents, including local-provincial, childrens', Italian-American and African-American. The poetry is distinctly mid-western, patriotic, American, and paints a picture of the era. Photographs by Paul Shideler (1888-1962), The Indianapolis News's first staff photographer, hired in 1903. He remained with the newspaper for more than fifty years. He was also an artist and painter. His portrait of James Whitcomb Riley is held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
