The Viking activity from the eighth to the eleventh centuries was an attempt to gain wealth and land and thereby power and prestige at the expense of the peoples of western and eastern Europe although others colonised the Atlantic islands. Wherever they settled in Europe they quickly assimilated into the local way of life and it was this factor and the coming of Christianity that saw the end of the Viking culture. 182 pages with 16 black and white plates, and 19 figures including maps.
