Sobre este artículo

New York: R.H. Russell, 1900. 1st ed. Hardcover. Near Fine. Parrish, Maxfield. 1st ed. Small folio (9 1/4" x 13"), tan buckram over matching boards with black and gilt illustrated title plate inset. Top edge gilt, fore edge uncut and many pages entirely unopened.

Illustrated with 8 photogravure plates by Maxfield Parrish with some fantastic elements, including a flying witch, St. Nicholas, Olaf the Dreamer up in the Treetop. Lovely cover plate, pasted on the boards, with a predominantly gold background in exceptionally nice condition with not a scratch or scuff anywhere.

There is a small bump to the top of the spine. The boards are in very nice, fresh-looking condition, normally prone to wear and more serious problems. There are a few slightly darkened spots on the boards and the top of the back cover is a bit darkened. The grey cloth spine has a couple very minor streaks but is still fresh looking with bright gilt. In fact, aside from some normal handling, the book looks as if it was safely preserved in a jacket (but it was not issued in one) or else put away in a safe, protected cabinet. Overall a near fine copy of a book difficult to find in this condition.

Sinopsis

For the bicentennial of its original publication—the first full-length book from the father of the American short storyIn 1809, New Yorkers were buzzing about a series of classified ads concerning the whereabouts of Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. They were unaware that Washington Irving had invented the man entirely and placed the ads himself. Knickerbocker's purported manuscript, A History of New York, was Irving's own. Told from Knickerbocker's point of view, A History of New York is a chronicle of New York's fifty years under Dutch rule in the 1600s that plays fast and loose with the facts, to uproarious effect. Irving's good-humored spoofing had staying power, and his satire provided the city with its first self-portrait. A History of New York propelled Irving to the heights of literary stardom and even made a little history of its own: New Yorkers are called Knickerbockers to this day.
