London: Printed by W. Bowyer, for the Editor, 1727. First Edition thus. Full Calf. Fine. First edition of the third English version of Castiglione's classic treatise on etiquette, the most celebrated instruction manual on the courtly manners of the Italian High Renaissance. 4to: [62],480,473-508pp [470, 471 misnumbered 471, 470 respectively; 473-79 repeated but text continuous and complete], with fine copper-engraved frontispiece by Vertue after the portrait by Raphael and parallel texts in Italian and English. Contemporary calf, spine in six compartments very richly gilt between raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, covers framed with French fillets, edges speckled red. A superb copy, internally fine, the binding tight and secure, very expertly rebacked. Lowndes 386. ("emphatically termed by the Italians the 'golden book'.") ESTC N956 ("In this issue [of two], 'To the reader' is on the verso of the last page of 'To the king', and there is a list of subscribers.") Bowyer ledgers 1296 (showing "printing on three sizes of paper: 970 copies on demy, 24 on royal, 7 on writing royal"). PMM 59 (Venice, 1528). First printed in Venice by Aldus, in 1528, and reprinted innumerable times since in every major European language. The earliest version in English, that of Sir Thomas Hoby, appeared in 1561; the second, by Robert Samber, in 1724. Castiglione's Il libro del cortegiano (The Book of the Courtier) "is a classic of Western literature: a conduct book describing the ideal courtier of the Renaissance (and to some degree the ideal court lady too); it is also a highly polished literary dialogue rich in classical lore and representative of the avant-garde culture of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy. Responsible for transmitting fundamental cultural ideas abroad, among them the notion of the all-rounded, or ‘Renaissance', man or woman, the stress on grace and elegance as part of the striving for perfection, and the details of the Neoplatonic love-theory then in vogue; it is also credited with having given rise in France to the concept of the gentilhomme and in England to that of the gentleman. . . . Interwoven into the fabric of the text is a wide spectrum of topics ranging from a theory of humor to an ethically grounded view of politics. . . . Truly encyclopedic in scope, The Book of the Courtier has been hailed as a veritable compendium of Renaissance culture." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

1724 French Essays of Michel Montaigne France Renaissance Philosophy Humanism

"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself."
― Michel de Montaigne, Essays

First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller,
"the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence".
Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the 'Essays,' that "Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds… Leer más

Second Edition of this comprehensive treatise on geomancy.Illustrated with numerous diagrams, schematic woodcuts and tables in text, as well as 10 plates, 1 of which is an engraved single-page plate, while the other 9 are fold-out woodcut diagrams or letterpress tables, some bound to face each other; plus large engraved printer's device with an armillary sphere on title-page; a few decorative woodcut head-pieces and initials. The Opus Geomantiae Completum "is divided into three parts devoted respectively to the theory, practice and questions taken from previous authors. The theory is largely astrological. Instead of jotting down four rows of dots at random, a wheel with sixteen projections is spun or whirled in order to obtain one of the sixteen geomantic figures. Descripción:
London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1897. Hard Cover. 312 pages. 'Ser Giovanni's collection, begun in 1378 and finished after 1385, derives its title, Il pecorone, 'the numbskull'-- a title probably not due to the author-- from the fact that so many pecoroni appear in the book. The frame story tells of a chaplain and a nun who on 25 successive days meet in a convent parlor, each telling the other a story each day. About half the stories are fictional; the other half are drawn from the Chronaca of Giovanni Villani. Many of the tales are stupid, but a few are definitely good. The best, that of Giannetto and the Lady of Belmonte, embodies the 'pound of flesh' motif in an excellent plot, from which Shakespeare derived, directly or indirectly, the 'pound of flesh' portion of the plot of The Merchant of Venice' (Wilkins). 110 copies printed of which this is number 95. Printed on 'Japanese vellum.' Good copy, vellum spine soiled, nicked at bottom. Stock#OB312.

Contracts are the most informative records we have about the nature of commissioning prestigious works of art in the Renaissance. This book provides a framework for interpreting these important documents by surveying a body of contracts and related records concerning altarpieces and frescoes painted in Italy from the early fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuries.
Michelle O'Malley structures her inquiry around a trio of fundamental questions concerning the language of contracts, the ramifications of stipulations for production and finance, and the means used to transmit information, particularly visual information, between a painter and his client. At the heart of the book is an analysis of the… Leer más

Descripción:
Milano: Societá Tipografica de' Classici Italiani, 1806. Hard Cover. viii, 230, [1] pages; 21 cm. "The long series of Italian humorous poets reaches its apex in the Florentine Francesco Berni. The active years of his life were spent chiefly in Rome, in busy secretarial service... in an environment of corruption that is reflected, in more ways than one, in his own work" --Wilkins, p. 201. The notes, largely by Anton Maria Salvini, 1653-1729, are taken from the collection entitled Opere Burlesche di M. Francesco Berni, di M. Gio. della Casa, del Varchi [etc.]..., Londra, G. Pickard, 1721-24, 2 vols. Bound in full contemporary leather; very good. Stock#OB528.
