Pp. xl, [2], 503 + xiii, [3], 542 plus upwards of 100 plates showing hundreds of items, including 8 plates in color and one in photogravure. Index. Dark blue cloth lettered in gilt on spines and front covers, pictorial elements in white, top edges gilt. Light extremity rubbing, two corners jammed, short half inch tear to upper front hinge of volume II. A very good set. These two volumes give a fascinating account of the journeys of Lady Charlotte Schreiber in her indefatigable search for ceramics and other objects for over 15 years in the late 19th Century. The English portion of her collection, consisting of 2,000 pieces, was presented to the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert) where it is known as the "Schreiber Collection." Lady Charlotte was a remarkable woman. She was first married to Sir John Guest, who owned the steel works at Dowlais in S. Wales, and when he died she continued to run the business. She then married her son's young tutor, Charles Schreiber, and it was with him that she traveled the continent collecting..

The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
