Sobre este artículo

Nice condition early copy of "LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER" by D.H. Lawrence with its uncommon, original dust jacket. 1933 1st edition thus, 2nd impression (stated); The Odyssey Press; Hamburg, Germany. Softcover. This edition contains an "Open Letter to the Public" written by Frieda Lawrence (D.H.'s wife) providing reasons why this may be the most important of the three versions of the novel: first authorized unexpurgated edition; properly edited ("stripped of all the little typographical mistakes in the original edition"); affordably priced "Cheap Edition" ("issued at a price that would bring the book within reach of everybody"). Though in poor condition, the original front and back covers of the dust jacket are included (the spine is missing). The book had been banned in the United States and England for obscenity - at the bottom of the back cover is printed the following: "Not to be Introduced into the British Empire or the U.S.A." There is an advertisement for James Joyce's "ULYSSES" at the back.

Condition:
Sun-fading to the paper on the spine, and along the edges of the covers. 1/2" paper tear at the bottom-left corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition. The dust jacket is present, though in Poor condition - the spine is not present, the front flap has nearly separated from the front cover, and there are tears and pieces missing.

Sinopsis

D.H. Lawrence's 1928 novel Lady Chatterley's Lover holds the distinguished title of being one the most banned books in history. Infamous for its explicit descriptions of sex and other vulgarities, it was only published openly in the United Kingdom in 1960. The book focused on the illicit affair between an upper-class woman and her lower-class gamekeeper, and it was received with outrage and intrigue, resulting in numerous abridged versions being published throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Because the first edition was so quickly banned from public consumption, there are many abridged and censored versions available, though few are as valuable as the original. The first printings were bound with brown boards with an insignia of a phoenix gracing its front cover. The phoenix has remained a potent symbol for the book, in large part because of the book's victory in the infamous British Obscenity Trial in 1960. D.H. Lawrence was a well-known English author who wrote many novels, short stories, and books of poetry. Not just an author, Lawrence was also a well-respected literary critic who wrote several essays regarding other famous writers, including Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman.
