[moderate shelfwear, slight fraying to cloth at bottom corners and top of spine, slight fading to spine cloth, small bookstore stamp (Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books) at bottom of front pastedown; jacket has a number of small chips, 1-1/2" closed tear and associated crease at top of front panel, a little paper loss at spine ends, general edgewear]. Novel set in a small English village, about an eccentric woman who is ridiculed by the community for her "dreamlike ideals and her passionate sympathy for every unhappy creature." When she befriends the village fool, their tolerance of her turns to suspicious hatred. Preface by Ethel Mannin, who compares the author with Dostoevsky and lauds the book for its "violent, savage poetry and beauty of its own." .
