Sweden 1967. A citizen of the world, Wifredo Lam seems to treat the world as a single unit. However, the experiences of his childhood and teenage years in Cuba remain forever present in his work. Just as jazz gave a new form that has reinvented music, Lam breathes new life into the world of painting by incorporating the stark, raw forms of African sculpture. His connections with Sweden are anything but new. He socialized with Lasse Söderberg and Ingemar Leckius during the 1950s, he exhibited in Malmö in 1955, and he married a Swedish woman a few years later.
