Alexis Carrel was a French surgeon and biologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912 for pioneering vascular suturing techniques. / Alexis Carrel (1873-1944), on vacation in France, was mobilized on August 1, 1914 and worked at the drawing of the wounded arriving at the Lyon train station, then at the Hotel-Dieu of this city where he was confronted with the dreaded problem of the old infected wound, generator of so many ineffective amputations and deaths.
