Sobre este artículo
London, Bell and Daldy; Cundall and Fleming, 1871. . Folio (38 x 28.5 cm); armorial bookplate to front pastedown, ownership inscripton to front free endpaper in pen 'Lord Lymington', woodcut device to title, woodcut initials and headpieces, 22 full-page engraved plates after Sir Edwin Landseer; tooled and gilt red morocco in an Arts & Craft design, all edges gilt, minor wear to spine ends and corners, foxing throughout mostly affecting margins, title and the occasional leaf of text more heavily affected, endpapers with dampstaining; 16, [44]pp.
A handsome copy of this retrospective of Edwin Landseer's (1802-1873) popular works, with an introductory biography of the painter, and textual descriptions accompanying each plate. By the time of his election to the Royal Academy in 1831 Landseer had 'established an enviable reputation as the foremost animal painter of the day', with a particular following amongst the English landed gentry, numbering the dukes of Atholl, Beaufort, Bedford, Devonshire, Gordon, Northumberland, and Wellington among his patrons (ODNB).
With provenance for the earls of Portsmouth, likely the 6th earl Newton Wallop, styled Viscount Lymington until his accession in 1891.
