First edition. 25 cm x 19 cm, publisher's original dark blue cloth, with gilt decoration and bevelled edges, pp. 392 & 649; all edges gilt, numerous portraits and engravings. Typed book labels on paste-downs, slight fraying to spine ends and corner tips, small spot on upper board of Volume II, else a fine bright example, and uncommon thus. .
