Leeds, The Yorkshire Naturalists' Union, 1900-1901. 8vo. 239 pp. Contemporary green, blind stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt vignette on the front board. Black endpapers. An excellent monograph on a local fauna yet including several new taxa. Published in the Union's Botanical Transactions, but these are finely bound offprints. Rare in this superior condition. The work was issued in four parts. Cancelled stamp on half-title, title, and rear endpaper recto. A fine copy.

John Nelson Darby (18 November 1800 – 29 April 1882) was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism. Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible. He produced translations of the Bible in German 'Elberfelder Bibel', French 'Pau' Bible, Dutch New Testament, and English (finished posthumously) based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. These are two lovely rebound books full of rare coloured illustrations dating from the 1860's.
With a coloured frontispiece, hand coloured vignette title page and a further 99 hand-coloured plates. Collated, work contains all plates .This work was produced by the Huddersfield printer Richard Brook. To the title page it states that this work is a family herbal, providing a history and description of all plants British or Foreign forming a complete book of herbs. This work is undated, though Copac states the W M Clark published editions of this work to be from 1854. A charming work, with comprehensive descriptions of numerous plant types, all of which have accompanying illustrations.

A nice early edition which has expertly been rebound for another 200 years of use. A well intended book which no longer matches today's historic rigor. Very worth the read. Volume one runs from 1856BC to 1859AD, although the author had reached 1700 by page 109! Volume two runs from 1860 to 1865.
