Hartford, CT: S. Lincoln, 1821. 14 x 22.5 cm. Reverend Lathrop served as sixty years as pastor of the First Church in West Springfield, MA, dying in 1820. Sprague (1795-1876) had graduated from Yale in 1815, studied at Princeton Theological Seminary, and became assistant to Rev. Lathrop in 1819. He based his funeral sermon on II Kings ii 12: ""And he saw him no m0re: and he took hold of his own clothesand rent them in two pieces."" Sprague later (1856) delivered an address on the occasion of the Centennial of the Ordination of Rev. Lathrop. Both Lathrop and Sprague were distinguished churchmen, and this sermon, though humble, is a model of literary excellence. Paper booklet, front wrap has 8 cm. closed tear. Name ""C. Rice"" written in elegant calligraphy on title page. Fair. . Catalogs: Religious.
