THE LAWES [LAVVES, LAWS] RESOLUTIONS OF WOMENS RIGHTS; Or, The Lavves [Laws] Provision for Women. A Methodicall Collection of such Statutes and Customes, with the Cases, Opinions, Arguments and points of Learning in the Lavv [Law], as doe properly concerne Women. Together with a compendious Table, whereby the chiefe matters in this Booke contained, may be more readily found, London; Printed by the assignment of Iohn [John] More, Esquire, and are to be sold by John Grive, at his Shop neare the Rowies in Chancery-Lane, over against the Sixe-Clerkes office, 1632 [number 3 partly lost, number 2 completely lost], cum privilegio, no author is given, but the author is generally believed to be the prominent legal figure Sir John Doderidge (1555-1628) in 1603 during the reign of James I with original manuscript or publication lost, the initials "T.E." at the end of the "Preface" are generally believed to be for Thomas Edgar, COMPLETE TEXT (except for last page 403/404) IN MANY PIECES INCLUDING SINGLE PAGES FROM LOSS OF SPINE AND DRYING OUT/BRITTLING OF VESTIGES OF IT, UNIQUE COPY WITH ANNOTATIONS BY ENGLISH LAWYER WILLIAM BAYNTUN, GRAY'S INN, being sold for rebinding and/or historically and legally significant content with annotations, about 70 lines of annotations most truncated at outer page edges ranging from one-word notes to about 7 lines, additionally about 30 marginal annotations too faint for the naked eye, two spots of underlining of three words with accompanying marginal notes, somewhat dingy pages with frequent light smudges and other age-wear mostly marginal and not affecting any text, mostly surface age-wear which can be removed or reduced in restoration, very worn front cover detached, back cover missing, printed in black letter, signatures/groups of pages of text block in pieces/sections precariously held by remains of spine so that the pages and sections come apart increasingly with handling because of dried out, brittle remnants of spine, last page sheet/pages 403-404 missing, 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" trimmed size as evident by some loss of autograph marginal notes in pen by apparently at least two previous owners [see below for signature of one of these], 404 pages called for by WorldCat/OCLC listing with last leaf missing from this copy containing the Conclusion, Section XL of Book V, the page numbering is irregular in several places with pages and sections verified as successive by continuity of text despite occasional mixed-up page number by collation with reference to the bookbinding practice of the time of printing the first word of the next page at the bottom right of the preceding page, all this matches up throughout the text, this copy has two signatures of W. Bayntun [d. 1785], Gray's Inn [London], one is on the reverse of the loose front endpage, the second on the reverse of the title page, William Bayntun was an English barrister admitted to Gray's Inn in 1746, there are occasional marginal notes in two different hands one of which resembles that of the signature of William Bayntun, many of these notes are truncated from trimming of the book at one time, Bayntun's books were sold at auction in London in 1787, presumably where this copy of this rare work was purchased by a previous owner eventually to make its way to the United States where it was purchased by the seller at an estate sale in New England /// PRICE INFORMATION: a copy was sold at auction this past summer for $12000 (hammer price £9500, Forum Auctions UK, 7/16/20), one copy located online at $25,000 /// CONDITION: see above for some condition notes and irregularities of page numbering, original 1632 rare book with covers detached, front cover present, small holes at bottom of title page partly effacing 1632 date indicating first edition, light age-toning throughout with occasional lightening of text though still legible, spots of soiling in margins not affecting text, page 113/114 about 1" tear at lower left corner and small loss at lower right corner with loss of a couple of letters of the last word of text and word indicating the start of the following page, occasional small tears at page edges, small dogears, and light creases, overall pages are supple/well-preserved, book complete except for final leaf pages 403/404 containing the Conclusion of Book V, book trimmed at one time for new binding since lost as evident by loss of some of the autograph marginal notes, there are occasional marginal notes in two different hands one of which resembles that of the signature of William Bayntun, many of these notes are truncated from trimming of the book at one time.
