Philadelphia: American Medical Association, 1855. Softcover. Octavo, 3-6, vii-viii, 13-127 pp with one folding plate. Good; bound in contemporary black leather with tears to spine and wear to corners; binding tight; text block age-toned; pages clean; folding map at back present and intact but with slight tears to join; MF consignment. Lewis Henry Steiner was born in Frederick, Maryland and educated at Marshall College, Pennsylvania, where he received the degree of A.M. in 1849, and was graduated the same year at the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a professor and lecturer at several medical colleges and universities before being actively employed during the Civil War as an inspector by the United States Sanitary Commission. For a period he was in charge of its operations in the Army of the Potomac as chief inspector. He published a brief history of the Commission in 1866.

He became president of the Frederick County School Board in 1865 which was engaged in developing school facilities for African-American children. He was elected for three successive terms to the State Senate. From 1855 until 1858, he was a contributor to, and afterward assistant editor of, The American Medical Monthly. In 1884 he was appointed librarian of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, remaining there until his death. 1358431. Special Collections.
