MacMillan, London, 1887 reprint of the 1870 first edition; 8vo, pp xi, 300; original red cloth gilt, spine faded and a little frayed at the head, with damp marking beginning at the foredge of both covers and affecting around a third of each; small tears to the edges of three or four leaves at the start but internally otherwise a very good, tight copy; ownership inscription in ink of a Frederick Willmer, 1889 and below the more recent one of Charles W Willmer. Fourteen essays by "Darwin's bulldog" published originally between 1854, the year he became Professor of Natural History at the Royal School of Mines aged 29 and 1870, and including the famous review of "On the Original of Species" in 1860 and responses to certain criticisms of Darwin's book four years later.
