Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems, William Edmondstoune Aytoun. Published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1877. Twenty-Sixth Edition. 8vo, pp. viii, 359, [1]. Red pebble-grain morocco boards with gilt titles and florets to banded spine; gilt ruled borders, florets and titles front; bevelled edges with inside dentelle edging; all edges gilt; pale yellow endpapers; black reading ribbon. Light foxing to blank page versus title and very light spots to title page. Annie Stuart King, Christmas 1878 in black elegant script to pastedown; contents otherwise appear unread and pages remain white, clean and tight. Boards are in near fine condition with rubbing to edges and a light fading to spine; gilt remains bright and is not rubbed. A lovely copy.
William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813 1865) was a Scottish lawyer and poet. Published in 1849, Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers is a collection of Jacobite ballads and poetry and was very popular in its time. Titles include: Edinburgh after Flodden; The Heart of the Bruce, and The Island of the Scots.
