[1640ca LINSCHOTEN DOETECUM ORIGINAL ENGRAVING China Mandarin river boat] ORIGINAL ENGRAVING FROM AN EARLY EDITION of Linschoten's travel book on Asia by Baptiste van Doetecum (English spelling, but also Doetechum, Deutechum, and other various spellings), edition unidentified/ca. 1640 probably French edition, numbered "32 en 33", title/caption in Latin underneath the image "Lecture, et ratio, quibus Chine primarij, Mandorines vocant gestante, combeq, quibus ad oblectationem per fluvios vehuntur" with title also in Dutch to the right, scene of Chinese Mandarin with retainers to the right and at the left a boat on a river illustrating (as noted in the title/caption) a pastime enjoyed by the Mandarin class, overall size to the plate mark 10" high x 12-/12" across with surrounding margins from 3/4" or wider, midfold, in upper left corner in the engraving "NLinschoten" for the book's author, at bottom right edge inside the border "Bapt a Doct fec" for the engraver; engraving authenticated as described by seller with lifetime guarantee; RARE individual Linschoten/Doetecum engraving, none recorded at WorldCat/OCLC, none found for sale (4/17/22) /// CONDITION: lightly age-toned at midfold with original strip of reinforcement on reverse, spots of minor edgewear, scattered spots of pinprick-size holes (about 8) at right side, largest are three in the face of the Mandarin, seen when engrving is held up to the light, but not noticeable with backing when light is not coming through, overall a well-preserved early 1600's/17th-century engraving with primary images bold…engraving shipped folded at midfold by USPS priority mail insured to any US address; keywords: 1600's/17th century engraving, original vintage engraving, travel print, Asia, China.
