written as a travelogue from a male anthropologist who was sent to persuade gethen, a planet devoid of gender distinctions, to join the ranks of a confederation of planets called ekumen. le guin used the novel as a thought-experiment to make plane gender within american society of the 1970s. while the novel is celebrated as a cornerstone of feminist science fiction, it ignited debate within the feminist community as many felt le guin should have been more radical in imagining a genderless society.

Sinopsis

The Left Hand of Darkness is a science fiction novel by Ursula K. Le Guin, first published in 1969. The book is one of the first major works of feminist science fiction and is one in a series of books by Le Guin all set in the fictional Hainish universe. It won the 1969 Nebula and 1970 Hugo awards. Plans for a feature film and video game based on the books were announced by Phobos Entertainment Holdings in 2004, but appear to have since stalled.
