This essay was "read before the Medico-legal Society of the city of New York at the regular meeting of the society, March, 1873. [And is republished with notes and additions from the Transactions of the Society." Beard calls serious attention to the aging process affecting cognitive functions, mental ability, and mental competence, especially with regard to aged and senior defendants and the issue of liability in civil and criminal cases. He also calls into doubt the competence of many "expert witnesses" in those proceedings. Original printed tan wrappers, chipped. Front wrapper with two small paper labels each with the same three-digit number. Very good.
