Sobre este artículo
New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., 1895. Gift Edition . Decorated Cloth. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., no date [circa 1895]. A Crowell gift edition, elaborately bound. 12mo, 356 pp. Previous owner's warm and dainty india ink inscription dated March, 1895 on the ffep, minute touching of the corners, else very little to call out as a flaw in this spectacular copy. One of the better-preserved examples of Crowell gift-binding you'll see; about near fine. One-quarter elaborate floral gilt-stamping over cream vellum-cloth, and for the covers, finely detailed and colored floral pattern on silk-textured paper. All edges gilt. Tiny corners of vellum-look-cloth as well. See scan. Serious curb appeal. As you know, since you're here, George Eliot was in fact a woman: Mary Ann Evans, of rural British upbringing. She was, in her writing, a political activist of the Jane Austen bent, and her novels Middlemarch, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Silas Marner. The Legend of Jubal / The Spanish Gypsy is itself a venture into pointedly (if less obviously) political, though beautiful, lyric poetry. In this form, a well-preserved and visually highly pleasing presentation of that. L101
