Descripción:
1858 Traditions of Dee-Coo-Dah Native American Indian Mounds Illustrated Pidgeon"Traditions of Dee-Coo-Dah" is general history of the lost Native American Indian tribes of Northern Mississippi and the ruins they left. He claimed to have discovered a network of symbols used by an ancient race of Native Americans called the 'Dee-Coo-Dah.'
Even though the events described in 'Traditions' are disputed, the content is highly desirable and helps develop the legends of 19th-century North American Indian tribes. According to Sabin, this book is
"A record of personal examination of a great number of ancient mounds and fortifications, and of the traditions regarding them, obtained from an aged Sioux chief…The numerous plates afford very clear illustrations of many remains of Indian structures."

Thomas Branagan’s thoughtful and unbiased synopses of the beliefs and practices of over forty Christian denominations active in America at the time, plus more than twenty-five non-Christian schools of thought. A compendium of overviews not only of the mainstream sects, but the small and the obscure as well, most now forgotten, such as the Rogereens, Separatists, Sublapsarians, Supralapsarians, Hutchinsonians, Glassites, Seceders. Nicolaitarians, Quietists, etc. The section on Methodism includes a table showing lay and clergy membership totals in America for each year from 1771-1809, and a lengthy section on Paganism provides a scholarly analysis of the philosophies and theologies of Classical Antiquity compared with those of Christianity. In the preface Branagan reveals how its writing was spurred by his…

Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
