Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co, 1868. First edition. Hardcover. A very nice copy. A fascinating account of Army service on the frontiers of Florida in the 1820s, the Black Hawk War, Tennessee in the 1830s, Arkansas, the Mexican War, and after that Santa Fe. In 1853 he resigned his commission as Lieutenant Colonel due to ill health. During the Civil War he returned to military service in the Volunteers as Major General of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He wrote charmingly of his horses, dogs, hunting, and the military life. The work is a classic of its period"- Graff.
