Mary Anne Everett Wood (Mrs. Green), (1818-1895), spent her childhood in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and moved to London in 1841. There in the British Museum reading room she systematically began the work that was to absorb her life, The Lives of the Princesses of England and The Letters of Illustrious Ladies. She continued her work after her marriage and the birth of her children. Her meticulous work and her skill at deciphering old manuscripts resulted in her appointment by the Government as clerk in the State Paper Office, the only female staff member in the department.
This work is a chronological selection of letters, not only letters written originally in English but also letters translated from Latin, Italian, Spanish, Norman French, and Scots. "Comparatively few of the letters have been before published, and those which have been printed have appeared only in works which are scarce or beyond ordinary reach" [preface]. Where necessary Wood supplied brief introductory remarks.
