Rev. Paxton was a Presbyterian anti-slavery preacher appointed minister for the Cumberland Congregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1826. He inherited slaves from his marriage but later freed them causing a controversy in his slave holding congregation. His anti-slavery letters were published after he left the Church. Several copies of this publication are held in institutions. Few auction records found. Scarce in the trade.
