Paris, France: Didot Jeune, 1796. Reprint Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 24mo 5" - 6" tall. These letters and epistles to and from Heloise and Abelard are collected in two beautiful little, pocket-sized tomes, measuring 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" tall and wide, respectively. Published originally in 1746 and then here reprinted in 1796. Bound handsomely in crushed red Morocco leather, gilt ruling to cover, spine, and title and volume number, too. Two fine black-and-white engravings by Villerey, one of Abelard, one of Heloise of Abeilard, quite fine and full-page. All edges gilt, newish marbled endpapers. Andre-Charles Cailleau (1731–1798) was a French book publisher, bookseller and man of letters. He was born in Touraine, France and became eventually a contemporary of Jacques Charles Brunet, and then died in Paris. Tome I: [4], 229 pp. plus a Table of Contents. Tome II: [4], 5-216 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
