FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH 1584, translated with additions from the Latin, 7 parts in 2 volumes, complete set, the 6 parts in Volume II each with its own divisional title page, a further part was added to the second edition. 16mo in eights, approximately 115 x 75 mm, 4½ x 3 inches, title pages in Volume II with pictorial border of animals and plants, very numerous woodcuts in the text almost 1 per page, images mostly 60 x 40 mm (1¾ x 2½ inches) or 40 x 60 mm, chiefly of plants, animals, fishes and birds, a few of distillation equipment, pages: Volume I, 1-648; Volume II, 649-943, plus [57] unnumbered pages of indexes, title pages counted in the pagination, bound in full early leather, triple gilt ruled border to covers, 4 gilt decorated raised bands to spine, richly gilt in compartments with floral motif, 2 gilt lettered red morocco labels, all edges gilt. Spines very slightly rubbed at head and tail, corners very slightly worn, first title page laid on old paper from a later book, missing tip of top corner, slightly browned, early old ink signature across centre, some pages lightly age-browned, intermittent pale damp-staining, occasional small light stains, a slightly trimmed copy, occasionally just shaving side notes or running title, small chip to 1 fore-edge margin, 1 lower corner torn off, with loss of side note and part of 1 word of text, 1 small top corner torn off, no loss of text, tiny closed tear to 1 upper margin. Bindings tight and firm. A good sound set. The first 2 parts of this work, L'Histoire des Plantes and L'Histoire des Plantes Aromatiques, qui croissent en l'Inde, tant Occidentale qu'Orientale, are a translation by Geoffroy Linocier of Antoine du Pinet's Historia Plantarum first published in Lyon in 1561. Pinet condensed the work of the Italian botanist P. A. Mattioli to produce one of the earliest pocket herbals. Arranged alphabetically, each plant is illustrated in woodcut, named in several languages and described briefly including information on where the plant can be found, and what its "qualities" were. The five remaining parts were added by Linocier who took the information from Gesner the Swiss physician and naturalist and other authors: L'Histoire des Animaux a quatre pieds; L'Histoire des Oyseaux; L'Histoire des Poissons; L'Histoire des Serpens; Entier discours et maniere de distiller les eaux de toutes sortes de plantes, & la vertu qui en provient.
